Mengapa Jari Menjadi Keriput Saat Basah?

Jari-jari yang berubah menjadi keriput ketika basah bisa jadi merupakan sebentuk adaptasi agar kita bisa menggenggam lebih kuat dalam kondisi basah. Hipotesis tersebut disampaikan Mark Changizi, ahli neurobiologi evolusioner di 2AI Labs, di Boise, Idaho, Amerika Serikat.

Hasil studi Changizi bersama koleganya yang dipublikasikan dalam jurnal Brain, Behavior, and Evolution itu bertentangan dengan anggapan umum bahwa jari menjadi keriput karena menyerap air.

Menurut Changizi, keriput pada jari yang basah berfungsi seperti alur pada ban. Keriput membentuk kanal sebagai tempat mengalirnya air ketika kita menekan ujung jari pada permukaan yang basah. Inilah yang menyebabkan cengkeraman jari-jari pada permukaan yang basah menjadi lebih kuat.

Changizi bersama timnya mempelajari 28 foto jari-jari yang keriput karena air. Tim dalam pengamatan menemukan kesamaan pola berupa kanal panjang tak bertalian yang merupakan percabangan dari titik di atas jari.

Saat kita menekankan jari, tekanan terjadi dari ujung jari ke belakang. Berbeda dengan bagian samping jari tempat air dapat mengalir dengan mudah, bagian datar pada jari mirip dataran tinggi yang merupakan tempat air bisa menggenang.

Keriput terbentuk pada dataran ini karena, "Di situlah kanal terbentuk untuk mengalirkan air," ucap Changizi. Ia akan menguji hipotesisnya tersebut untuk melihat apakah orang yang jari-jarinya keriput dapat menggenggam lebih baik dalam kondisi basah.

Misteri Goa Son Doong yang Bisa Bersiul

Goa Son Doong di Vietnam memiliki ukuran panjang sekitar 5 km, tinggi 200 m, dan lebar 150 meter yang dinobatkan sebagai goa terbesar di dunia mengalahkan Goa Deer di Malaysia yang hanya memiliki ukuran 2km, tinggi 100 meter, dan lebar 90 meter. Goa Son Doong yang terletak di Taman Nasional Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Kabupaten Bo Trach, Provinsi Quang Binh, Vietnam ini selain memiliki ukuran yang sangat besar juga memiliki keunikan lain yaitu goa ini bisa mengeluarkan suara siulan sepanjang hari tidak perduli itu malam ataupun siang.


Peneliti Inggris datang ke goa ini pada tahun lalu dan mulai melakukan observasi dan terkejut dengan ukuran goa ini, para peneliti dari Inggris tersebut juga meneliti bunyi-bunyi aneh seperti siulan yang dikeluarkan oleh goa ini. Dan tim peneliti Inggris dari British Cave Research Association itu, berhasil menguak suara-suara aneh yang selama ini ditakuti penduduk. Menurut mereka siulan aneh itu berasal dari angin juga sungai bawah tanah yang airnya sangat deras sehingga menggemakan suara-suara aneh itu.

Sebenarnya para ilmuwan Inggris ini bukanlah yang pertama menemukan goa raksasa itu. Adalah penduduk setempat yakni, Hồ-Khanh yang menemukannya pada 1991. Dia telah memberi tahu soal penemuan itu, tapi tidak ada yang berani datang ke sana karena siulan-siulan aneh yang muncul dari dalam.
